MAXXI - Rome Comes into the 21st Century

The MAXXI is the recently opened contemporary art museum in Rome designed by Zaha Hadid.

The Power Station of Art - New Chinese Art

The Power Station of Art located in Shanghai is the first contemporary art museum in China run by the national system. It is a converted power station.

AR4T: Artists Republic 4 Tomorrow

AR4T is a gallery in Laguna Beach, California that provides a space for emerging contemporary artists to show their work. It opened its doors in May 2010 and in August 2013, it was able to upgrade and move to a larger space.

"It is our belief that art creates community. As humans we need to be shaken up, constantly in motion, exposed to change. Visual arts, music, and language are as necessary to our bodies as air and water. To live without art is like living on a dry desert plain… or being stuck forever in a planned community mini-mall.
Artists Republic For Tomorrow works with artists who make amazing works in the studio and are also leaders in life – travelers, curators, musicians, skateboarders, surfers, teachers, builders. These people are the vanguards of our day, shaping the way we see and feel the world. We stand in support of them, offering not just original art works, photographs and prints to a growing collector base but an open invitation to join in the fun."

Currently they are preparing to exhibit Taka Hayashi's "Portrait of Nature", a self-taught Japanese-American illustrator, graphic designer, and footwear designer. The show will last from May 2-24 2015 (I plan to take a look!)

"Central in Hayashi’s works are landscapes, birds, symbols and cultural signatures that refer to tribes worlds apart: Native American craft, ‘80s skate culture, North African tribal art, and ‘60s psychedelia, to name a few. The mystery is in how Hayashi traps, and then connects, quick flashes and deep feelings of these worlds on canvas.
Working in charcoal, ink, gouache, watercolor, acrylic, and spray paint, this new series by Hayashi is presented in a range of earthy tones, vibrant hues, and black-and-white, and range in size from 24”x36” to 51”x51”."

Art Cube: Cutting Edge Contemporary

Art Cube is a "cutting edge contemporary" gallery located in Laguna Beach, California. It seeks to establish a relationship between artist, artwork, and viewer.
"Art Cube is a gallery that supports my continuous search for truth in art, a place that offers a certain breathing room for the spirit. I believe that Art can not fully exist without interaction that questions its significance. Therefore, Art Cube builds a unity between the artist and the viewer, and it is only in this interaction that art takes its true meaning." - Sanja Simidzija (owner and curator)

2015 Art Fairs

2015 ART FAIRS

National and International Art Fairs

For those interested in collecting art, art fairs are an excellent place to begin one's art education. One can see a wide range of works in a short period of time. While some fairs focus on a specific type of artwork, such as photography, prints, or contemporary art, others present a broader range. The artwork is usually of good quality, as usually only the top galleries and dealers can afford the high cost of participating in an art fair. In addition, art fair organizers will sometimes selectively invite artists.

If possible, attend art fair opening night previews. This is where you'll find the best selection and have the first opportunity to purchase artwork before the fair opens to the general public. Opening nights are frequently gala events, supporting one or more nonprofit art organizations. They're usually very enjoyable, you can buy art, socialize with the art community, and have a good time.

Rubell Family Collection & Contemporary Arts Foundation

The Rubell Family Collection (RFC) was founded in 1964 in New York City, shortly after its founders Donald and Mera Rubell were married. It is now one of the world's largest, privately owned contemporary art collections. Since 1993 the RFC is exhibited in a 45,000-square-foot former DEA facility in Miami, Florida. The collection is constantly expanding and features well known artists such as Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, and Andy Warhol. In addition to displaying internationally recognized artists, the RFC actively acquires and exhibits emerging contemporary artists.

M+ : What's Next for Art Museums?

M+ is a new museum of visual culture currently under construction in West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong, overlooking Victoria Harbor. It is expected to open to the public sometime in 2018. The winning architects of M+ Design Competition were Herzog & de Meuron, known for designing the Tate Modern (London) and Bird's Nest Stadium (Beijing). One of the shortlisted designers for the project was previously blogged upon, Renzo Piano. "The design of M+ will incorporate latest proven technologies and encourage sustainability to be adopted in the development. M+ shall target to become a "Low Carbon and Low Energy" landmark venue in the district."
M+ will focus on 20th-21st century art, design, architecture, and moving image.
"M+ aims to build a world-class collection representative of the 20th and 21st century visual culture, encompassing the disciplines of visual art, design and architecture, and moving image from Hong Kong, China, and expanding to other regions of Asia and the rest of the world. Current holdings include a wide range of media: paintings, photography, installation, objects, architectural models, drawings or studies, printed matter, and electronic media."
M+ strives to offer a wide variety of services and opportunities to its visitors. Some of these include youth summer camps, an Arts Pavilion that offers public outdoor space for art, community, and escape from hectic city life, and a Time Capsule that has been sealed and scheduled to open in 100 years. The directors for M+ believe that this museum could quite possibly become one of the most important institutions for the visual arts of our time.

This video discusses the interesting building process of M+.

MASSMOCA - Western Massachusetts

Since opening in 1999, MASS MoCA has become one of the world's premier centers for making and showing the best art of our time. With annual attendance of 120,000, it ranks among the most visited institutions in the United States dedicated to new art. More than 80 major new works of art and more than 50 performances have been created through fabrication and rehearsal residencies in North Adams, making MASS MoCA perhaps the most fertile site in the country for new art. The museum thrives on making and presenting work that is fresh, surprising, and challenging.

MASS MoCA exhibits work by many of the most important artists of today—both well known, and emerging—focusing on large-scale and complex installations that are impossible to realize in conventional museums. Our broad, soaring galleries with 110,000 square feet of open, flexible space and their robust industrial character have proven both inspiring and empowering to artists.
