Sia: Smart Celebrity

Sia is an Australian-born singer, song-writer, and music video director. With her album, 1000 Forms of Fear, ranking in the top 10 of 2014, we have become well aware of Sia's style: hip hop, funk, soul, and oh yeah, she never shows her face on camera. She claims that she has had past, unpleasant experiences with celebrity, and at this point in her life, she basically wants to be unrecognizable by the public. "I don't want to be famous or recognizable. I don't want to be critiqued about the way that I look on the internet. You know, I was at Target the other day buying a hose, and nobody recognized me and my song was on the radio, and I thought, 'OK, this experiment is working."
1000 Forms of Fear has given Sia 3 hit singles including, Chandelier, Elastic Heart, and Big Girls Cry, all of which she has created a fairly controversial and much talked about music video for. She calls these music videos a Trilogy, mainly because in these videos, 11-year-old dance prodigy, Maddie Ziegler, takes on Sia's persona, and brings her deep, dark lyrics and meaning behind the songs to life. In all three videos, Ziegler is wearing simply a nude leotard, and a wig that resembles Sia's hair, while performing somewhat crazed and psychotic choreography. Many have commented on how these videos represent depression, anxiety, and other psychological conditions, as well as drug addiction and possibly child abuse.
