Oxman teaches media arts and sciences at MIT’s Media Lab. She calls what she does "material ecology." The dome here seems spun from silk...well that is exactly right! The 2010 piece took 6,500 silkworms to cover a digitally fabricated dome. She is part of the Mediated Matter Group who aim to integrate natural forms with manmade ones. She starts with computational form-finding designs and then adds biological materials.
